Oberndorf 1867 - 1929 Gmunden

Alfred Poell was born in Oberndorf near Salzburg in 1867. Due to his father being a doctor, he too studied medicine at the university of Innsbruck and started working as a gynecologist in Linz in 1899. Afterwards, he attended the Munich Academy for Art, where he was taught by Willhelm Velten. At first, he joined the Upper-Austrian Art Association, but exited it later to join the newly formed artist group “Der Ring”. In 1921 he also joined another Art Assembly, “MAERZ” in Linz, and in 1913 he finally joined the Vienna Secession, where he already started exhibiting regularly in 1912. The Austrian gallery Belvedere was interested in one of the works in the exhibition and bought it in 1914. Poell was Matthias May’s patron and provided him with a studio un 1917. In 1925, Alfred Poell was given the “Große Staatspreis”. The artist mostly portrayed landscapes, only painting still-lives later on in his life. His favorite motifs were snowscapes and waterscapes, as well as high mountains with lakes.
