Already during his lifetime Ludwig Heinrich Jungnickel was enthusiastically celebrated as the “greatest graphic artist and draughtsman
of animals of the 20th century”[1] . An official epitaph by the Wiener Künstlerhaus even called him “one of the greatest European artists
of the 20th century, whose life’s work is an integral part of the history of Austria’s painting and graphic art”[2].
Today, Jungnickel is unanimously considered as one of the most important painters and graphic artists of the last century and as significant proponent of classical modernism in Austria. Many exemplary works of his versatile artistic oeuvre are in relevant Austrian museums as well as in German and international collections.
