Karl Maria Schuster

Purkersdorf 1871 - 1953 Wien

Karl Maria Schuster studied at the Academie of Fine Arts in Vienna. His teachers have been Julius Berger, Leopold Karl Müller and Fritz L´Allmand. He got a scholarship for a stay in Rom and he continued his studies there for two more years.
This scholarship is called "Price of Rome". It existes since the beginning of the 19th century and every year the best of the absolvents of the Academie of Fine Arts gets it. In former times the artists could use an atelier in Rom for one year.
Beside Karl Maria Schuster the Rome Price was given for example to J.M. Olbrich, Josef Hoffmann, Max Weiler and Oskar Kokoschka.
At this time Schuster started to travel a lot and so he became more and more a painter of landscapes. Beside the specialisation of landscapes and cities he focused also on the marine. He also was very popular for his portraits of the viennese society and his contributions to the parties of the "Künstlerhaus".
