Oswald Haerdtl

Oswald Haerdtl was born in 1899 in Vienna. He studied at the School for Applied Arts in Vienna under Koloman Moser, Oskar Strnad and Josef Frank. From 1922 onward he was active as a junior teacher and became the assistant of Josef Hoffmann, who entrusted him with the leadership of his studio in 1927. Hoffmann and Haerdtl ran this studio together between 1930 and 1939. He was also professor at the School for Applied Arts between 1925 and 1959. Oswald Haerdtl was directly involved in all building activities and exhibition events of the Wiener Werkstätte from 1927 onward. Alongside this, he created striking designs for furniture, fashion, textiles, glass and metalwork. Oswald Haerdtl died in Vienna in 1959.
