Alfred Kubin
Leitmeritz, Nordböhmen 1877 - 1959 ZwickledtAlfred Kubin was born in Litomerice in 1877. He completed a photographic apprenticeship in Klagenfurt between 1892 and 1896, took lessons at a private school of painting in 1898 in Munich and finally began to study at the Academy in Munich but broke off his studies prematurely. In 1907 he moved from Munich to the remote village Zwickledt in Upper Austria and lived there very reclusively, even though he kept contact with many artists, until his death.
The narrative, the fantastic and the grotesque, the element of irony and the satirical represent a large part of the “dual talent” in Alfred Kubin’s work – he was both writer and illustrator at one and the same time – and have secured for him a unique place in the history of 20th century Austrian art.
