Otto Wagner

Vienna - Vienna

Otto Wagner was born in Vienna in 1841. He studied in Berlin and Vienna. He worked on his own since 1864 but later he was very critical against his own early work. Wagner was the outstanding personality of architecture in Vienna of the late 19th and early 20th century. His work combines forms of the historism and modern architecture. His development is recognizable in the increasing liberation of traditional forms and is accompanied from functional aspects. Since 1884 Otto Wagner was professor at the Wiener Akademie. As their teacher he trained a legendary school (Josef Hoffmann, Joseph Maria Olbrich) which developed his ideas on highest aesthetical level. Wagners main works are: the installation of the Wiener Stadtbahn (1892 – 1901), the church am Steinhof (1902 – 07) and the Postsparkassenamt in the first district (1904 – 06).
