Emilie Mediz-Pelikan

Vöcklabruck 1861 - 1908 Dresden

Emelie Mediz-Pelikan, one of the representatives of the new romanticism of nature, was born in Vöcklabruck in 1861. After studying at the Vienna Academy, she embarked on study trips to Italy, France, Hungary and Belgium, among further destinations. Mediz-Pelikan was initially influenced by the "Paysage Intime". This style is considered a predecessor of Impressionism and, like the artist's paintings, is characterized by simple, yet very familiar-looking landscapes. By 1890 when the artist had her first solo exhibition, she had finally arrived at Impressionism. Her rather soft color palette conveys the atmosphere and play of light in a unique way. Together with her husband Karl Mediz, she was also represented with three works at the opening exhibition of the Vienna Secession. Emelie Mediz-Pelikan died at the age of 47 in Dresden in 1908. Since her death, exhibitions in private galleries have been the main reason for the artist's rediscovery.
