Peter Weihs

Mödling, Lower Austria 1940 - 2021 Mödling, Lower Austria

Peter Weihs, born in Mödlling in 1940, studied at the Academy of Applied Arts and worked as a professor of ceramics at the Academie des Beaux-Arts in Kinshasa/Zaire from 1972 to 1991. However, the political and economic situation forced him to return to Austria after 20 years of teaching in Congo as artistic work is hardly possible under the circumstances of riot at that time. Study trips through Central Africa evoked a great passion for culture and led him to create his own collection of old and new artworks to act as messengers for the importance of cultural exchange.
In addition to his ceramic work, he was also known for drawing and painting. His drawing technique includes a condensation of motifs, regardless of the straight and the odd, and results in a pulsating sketch that subsequently functions as a preliminary stage for his painting.
Peter Weihs paints and draws pictures populated by fantasy creatures. A mosaic of two-dimensionally assembled bodies, where the figures seem to alternately fly, dance or even swim. (Erika Patka)
Weih’s works were shown at the Biennale in Dakar, Senegal, in 1992 and the International Ceramics Exhibition in Varazdin, Croatia in 2009, amongst other solo and group shows.
