Hans Bolek was born in Vienna in 1890. He studied at the School of Arts and Crafts under Josef Hoffmann. At the same time, he worked in the architectural office of Otto Prutscher. In 1910, Bolek set up as an independent architect in Vienna. He worked both as an architect and painter, as well as a designer of furniture, jewellery and glass. Though Hans Bolek was not a member of the Wiener Werkstätte, he was close to them in terms of style. Among his best known glass designs are the works created for the prominent glass maker, Johann Lötz Witwe, Klostermühle.
