"Tyrolean Peasants, Sunday" represents a typical work for Alfons Walde. Painted in 1920, it depicts village life in the countryside. Three strong men in the foreground fill almost the entire space of the painting. The composition is completed by the depiction of a peasant woman in the background on the left, which gives the whole work more depth and harmony. No individual features are discernible; the faces are roughly sketched, giving them a certain anonymity. The picture seems like a snapshot, a moment captured by the artist without identifying any particular person. The farmers are in harmony with their surroundings, they literally merge with their scenic environment, in this case probably a village square. In the colour composition, Walde limited himself to natural colours, which emphasise and support each other through the interplay of light and dark.
